That evening, Layra entered the great hall beside the aged healer, who leaned heavily on her walking stick. Long rows of wooden tables lined the hall, with those seated turning to look at them as they moved farther into the room.

“Come child, I’ll show you where the candidates sit,” Bria said, leading her through the thongs of tables. The elderly woman could still maintain a moderate pace, and had been welcoming of her on arrival. Her cottage was so similar to the one Layra had grown up in, that after settling in, it was as if she had lived there all her life.

People turned to look at them as they passed, talking mutedly. Layra had loosely braided her hair, leaving it to hang in a thick braid down her back. She was used to people commenting on its colour, however heard none of the usual remarks, and it helped to keep her head high as they slowly progressed to the table where the candidates were seated.

Layra looked over the candidates, whom were all dressed in similar robes, only in varying colours. Astrid, Krouse and Levi, along with all the others whom had travelled with them from the east, were dressed in blue robes. Candidates from the south were dressed in yellow, those from the west in red, and the north in green. Astrid looked at her and rolled her eyes, making Layra even more aware of the burgundy cloak she had been handed by Bria earlier.

“Why do I not have a coloured robe?” Layra whispered to the elderly woman.

“Because you are a healer,” she replied, indicating to the cloak, “and your place is already established within the keep,” Bria firmly concluded, before indicating for her to join the others.

Layra joined the other candidates, sitting down next to Levi who had saved her a seat, and watched as Bria steadily made her way to the main table, taking her place next to an aged man.

“That’s our trainer, Ulrich,” Levi told her, pointing to the old man also dressed in blue robe.

Just then, the Crown Guardian, who was seated at the centre of the table, rose to address the room. His action made Layra even more apprehensive, thinking that they had delayed proceedings with their late arrival. Her gaze shifted to the man’s right, where Jayme was seated, while the crown guardian welcomed the new candidates and explained the proceedings to them.

Once they had finished their meal, their trainer joined them, and sat down not far from Layra, nodding to her in acknowledgement.

“Well now, as ye heard, tomorrow morning after chores, ye be going through the second stage of selections. Lord Javier’s mare will select the candidates whom are to stand for impression-” Ulrich started, only to be interrupted by Astrid. “But we’ve already been selected.”

“Aye, that ye have, but it is always up to the dam to cast out the last unsuited candidates,” Astrid made to interrupt again but the man lifted his hand to still her, “Unicorn dams know what be best for their offspring.
